Integrated Intel Graphics used over Dedicated Radeon Card

Overview

It is not unusual these days for systems to comes with two video cards, a powerful dedicated card from Nvidia or Radeon, and a less powerful on-board video card from Intel.

Recently we have seen some Windows updates cause a change on the system where the Intel card is being used when running Optuma instead of the more powerful Nvidia or Radeon card. This can cause display issues when opening Optuma:

Example of the display error you may see, the background of the border is black (even in White or Lite mode) and the text / logos are distorted.

Solution

NOTE: If you are using the latest version of Windows 10 please click here for an alternative process.

If this occurs on your system and you have a dedicated Nvidia or Radeon card available you should be able to force the system to use it when opening Optuma.

For information on how to do this with an Nvidia card please click here.

For a Radeon card please run through the following process:

First you need to ensure you have the latest AMD drivers for your card:

https://www.amd.com/en/support

Once the latest drivers are installed do the following:

  1. Right-click on the desktop
  2. Click AMD Radeon Settings from the menu.
  3. Cilck on System.
  4. Click on Switchable Graphics.
  5. In the Switchable Graphics menu, the Running Applications view will be displayed by default. This view lists recent and current running applications and their assigned Switchable Graphics mode.

NOTE: If you do not see these options on your system please try this alternative process to adjust the settings via Windows 10 directly.

For applications that are not locked by the operating system, the following Switchable Graphics modes can be selected from the application drop-down menu:

  • Power Saving - Selects the integrated GPU, which consumes less power but provides lower performance
  • High Performance - Selects the discrete GPU, which consumes more power but provides better performance
  • Based on Power Source - Selects the integrated GPU when running on battery and selects the discrete GPU when plugged into a power outlet

High Performance is the option you will want to select for Optuma.

Select a desired mode for the application and the change will take effect the next time the application is loaded. If Optuma is not on the list do the following:

  • Right Click on the desktop
  • Click AMD Radeon Settings from the menu.
  • Cilck on System.
  • Click on Switchable Graphics.
  • Click on the Running Applications option and select Installed Profile Applications to view all applications detected by the graphics driver.
  • If Optuma is not listed, use the Browse option to locate and add the Optuma application to the list.
