McAfee Total Protection

Overview

McAfee searches for viruses by looking in files for partial matches or “fingerprints” of a virus. While it is rare, it is possible that a build of Optuma has a small portion that matches the fingerprint of a virus. As we control the whole Optuma building process, we can be sure that all of our files are virus-free and this is what is termed a false positive.

Solution

  1. Open McAfee Total Protection by either the shortcut on your desktop or by right clicking on the McAfee icon (see below image) in your System Tray and select Open McAfee Total Protection.

  2. The McAfee Total Protection control panel will now display.

  3. From the Control Panel screen left click on View firewall and anti-spam settings

  4. Next, select Firewall from the menu that now displays.

  5. From the window that displays select Internet Connections for Programs

  6. You will now need to click the Add button.

    The following window will display:

  7. From here click the Browse button as pictured above and then add the following program exceptions, each exception has to be entered separately.

    C:\Program Files\Optuma\Optuma.exe

    C:\Program Files\Optuma\Updater.exe

    After you have nominated the program location, set the Access to Incoming and outgoing and Net Guard to Off. Then click the Save button after each exclusion entry.

    Once the exclusions have been entered it will be displayed in the Internet Connections for Programs listing.

  8. After you have configured the Firewall you will need to go back to the main menu.

  9. From the Control Panel screen select Schedule and run scans

  10. To exclude Optuma folders from McAfee scans you will need to configure both the Custom Scan and the Scheduled Scans.

  11. To set up a custom scan, left-click on Scan Your PC, then select Run a custom scan from the next window that displays.

  12. From the window that displays, select Excluded Files and Folders

  13. Select Add folder.

    The Browse For Folder window will display, you will need to add an exception for each of the following folders, one at a time.

    C:\ProgramData\Optuma

    C:\Users\[Account Name]\AppData\Local\Optuma \Documents\Optuma

    Note: Some of the folders listed above can be hidden by Windows. For information on displaying these folders, please click here.

  14. After you have completed adding the above folder exceptions you will then need to repeat the process for the Scheduled Scans under the Virus and Spyware Protection tab. Then select the Excluded Files and Folders option.

  15. Then select Add Folder.

    The Browse For Folder window will display, you will need to add an exception for each of the following folders, one at a time.

    C:\ProgramData\Optuma\

    C:\Users\[Account Name]\AppData\Local\Optuma\Documents\Optuma\

  16. Next, exceptions need to be added to the Real-Time Scanning under the Virus and Spyware Protection

  17. From select the Excluded Files option

  19. From here, click the Browse button as pictured above and then add the following program exceptions, each exception has to be entered separately.

    C:\Program Files\Optuma\Updater.exe
